our first sdate would be at a public place. maybe a nice resturant, or sporting event. It easier to excuse yourself if you see that you and your date are not compatible.

Usually creates an atmosphere of spectating and not heavy conversation on the first date. Just makes sense. Great to introduce others to my son...he is back from the Freedom Iraq safe and sound out of the marines. (I definitely don't worry about my safety around him!)
